After war broke out in their hometown of Mogadishu, Somalia in 1991, Iman and Siham Hashi were able to begin truly exploring their love for music. These two Somalian refugees formed a duo called Faarrow, a singer/songwriter group, upon their relocation to North America.

Faarrow’s songs combine pop with a slight influence of hip hop and rhythmic African percussion. Their songs have relay a positive message about knowing who you truly are and pursuing your ambitions. Their upbeat songs and catchy lyrics quickly turn any listener into a fan and make you just want to jump around and dance.

The Hashi sisters are not only known for their catchy lyrics and addictive beats but are also UN spokespeople for the UN Refugee Agency and are regularly involved in humanitarian efforts through all kinds of organizations. The sisters speak about how, as children, they wanted to find some way to help Somalia. They started by bringing awareness through Twitter and Facebook to the Dadaab refugee camp, where their great uncle and his children resided. In addition to their budding musical career, the sisters have also begun a non-profit agency that creates jewelry, providing Somali women with a sustainable income.

This singer/songwriter group brings a lot to the table. Not only do they have amazing songs that encourage finding your true self, but they are incredibly helpful to the lives of refugees, particularly from their home country of Somalia. They are dedicated to improving and helping sustain the lives of refugees however they can. Faarrow recently released their EP titled “Lost”. This music can be found on Spotify, Soundcloud, and Itunes. I encourage everyone to go out and give this amazing duo a listen.
