With the first few weeks of the school year under our belts, the workload is starting to pick up again. Between homework, extracurriculars, community service, relationships, and studying for standardized tests, many of us may find ourselves juggling many different commitments all at once. This kind of scheduling can be very stressful at times, especially with the pressure put on students to “be successful”. But how successful are you really if you are not happy? Success today is often measured in salary, job position, or how prestigious of a college you went to. While all of these things are important, there have been many studies done showing that they do not correspond to happiness. In the future, we will hopefully look at success in a more holistic way, including quality of life, overall happiness, ability to adapt, and job satisfaction.

So, when you feel overwhelmed by all of the things you feel like you should be doing, try to evaluate what really matters to you. What might be best for someone else is not always best for you. Try not to compare yourself to others because everyone has different talents and passions. It is important to also leave time to take care of yourself. When thinking about your schedule, make sure you are spending some of your time on things that you look forward to. If praying, doing yoga, or even watching Netflix makes you feel calm and centered, make sure you leave time for that. When you are feeling stressed out over something, remember that it is just one small piece of your life as a whole. One bad grade on a test, drama with a friend, or not getting the position/role/job you wanted will not matter in a year. You won’t even remember it. Just keep pushing through the hard stuff and remember to spend time working on your happiness. You got this!
