What superstitions do you have?

I am superstitious of the moon. If I have a bad night’s sleep, I check to see if it was the full moon that night. I think the full moon dictates weird dreams or not being able to sleep. Normally, I am right – if I have a weird night check the moon calendar, it usually full.

Where’s your dream travel location?

I really want to go to Burma. It’s like Thailand, but much less westernized, and I think it would be a great cultural immersion experience.

What message do you have for the admission rep reading your application to your top college?

Please ignore my ACT math scores, they don’t dictate my intelligence. And I don’t want anything to do with math!

If you could master any instrument, what would it be and why?

I know how to play the piano, but mastering it would be fun. But also, why not the harp? I could play ambiance music anytime, anywhere, as long as there’s a harp.

What’s the most ridiculous fad you followed in middle school?

I had silly bands, that was a big thing. The more you had, and the more colors you had, the better it was. But it lasted only about a week for me – I sort of capped off and wondered, “what am I doing with my life?” A beginning of an existential crisis over silly bands.

If you had a song playing every time you walked through the door, what song would it be?

Well. my joking answer is O Fortuna, the operatic song that plays anytime something in a movie is going wrong. But really, probably Dream a Little Dream of Me, by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

Do you have a hidden talent?

I’m a really good cook. And I’m really good at poaching eggs – I can poach them perfectly. I can also juggle, but that’s not as special of a talent.

If you could master any foreign language, what would it be?

I’d say Italian, because my wife and kids are Italian citizens, and we spend a lot of time in Italy. And I am also currently studying through an Italian school. But I think I would also like to learn French because it’s pretty widely spoken and it’s an important international language in terms of politics and international organizations. But I’m glad I speak English, English is crazy.

If you could send a message to the entire world, what would you say?

I would say that the single most amazing thing is that God is real, God loves us, and God is present with us in the Eucharist. I would shout that from the mountaintops.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

I don’t like it when people are late. My motto is: 10 minutes early is 5 minutes late. You should always be 15 minutes early for everything. I also don’t like small talk, it’s annoying.

What would you tell your 16 year old self now?

Calm down, things are not as complicated as you think. Life gets better – it gets harder in some ways – but definitely better. Learn a language now, and stick with it.

What’s a weird combination of foods that you like?

I like sweet and spicy things. I used to work at a bagel shop, and one of my favorite combinations was jalapeño cream cheese on a cinnamon sugar bagel. It’s really good.
